A legacy woven in faith

Born into a rich spiritual heritage, Bishop Edward A. Coles continues a powerful family legacy as a fourth-generation pastor in the Church Of God In Christ (COGIC). His spiritual journey began early, experiencing salvation and anointing by the Holy Spirit at just six years old. He faithfully served alongside his father, Dr. Lloyd C. Coles, at Gethsemane COGIC for many years. Bishop Coles pursued his education at prestigious institutions like the University of the District of Columbia, Trinity College, Alexandria Theological Seminary, and Logos Christian College, earning a B.A. in Pastoral Ministry and becoming a certified ETA Instructor. His life is a testament to lifelong learning and spiritual devotion.

Dedicated to growth and leadership

Beyond his pastoral duties, Bishop Coles excelled in his secular career, retiring in 2004 from the United States District Court after 30 years, distinguished as the first African American male in senior management. His dedication to COGIC leadership is extensive, serving as Special Assistant, Jurisdictional Secretary for Washington, DC Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction (WDCJ), and Assistant Superintendent. In 2015, he was appointed Pastor of Gethsemane COGIC and Superintendent of the Lion Of Judah District, leading the merger that formed Gethsemane Life Ministries COGIC. Under his stewardship, the Alexandria Church Property became mortgage-free in 2017. His ascent to Auxiliary Bishop in 2021 and appointment as Pastor of The New Bethel COGIC in 2024 reflects his unwavering commitment and God's divine plan. He also initiated WDCJ's First Policies & Procedures Manual and has partnered with COGIC Foreign Jurisdiction in Israel & Brazil.
