Our Lady First
Zephra A. Coles
The life, service, and ministry of
Lady Zephra Coles
affectionately known as Lady Zee or Lady First. Her life quietly, consistently, and powerfully reflects the love of Christ.
She serves with a focus, and mission-driven service to the body of Christ.
Lady Zephra Coles embodies what it means to enlarge the territory. Her ministry reaches far beyond the four walls of the church and into the heart of the community. She leads outreach efforts that provide nutritional meals to local homeless shelters, food banks, and most recently, to a neighboring elementary school pantry. She, alongside pastor and others in the congregation, attend Advisory Neighborhood Commission meetings. Her compassion is not theoretical—it is active, practical, and visible.
What makes Lady Zee’s service especially impactful is that she never leads from a distance. She is not a sideline spectator. She is in the trenches—loading boxes, inspecting food labels, preparing containers, and ensuring that every detail is handled with care. Wherever the work is happening, Lady Zee can be found with “boots on the ground” working alongside the people.
Lady Zee’s worship is authentic and unrestrained. When the music ministry renders a song, she does not hesitate to lift her voice, take the microphone, or pick up a tambourine to add to the praise. Her worship invites others to enter freely into God’s presence.
She also serves with excellence behind the scenes. When it is time to clean or prepare, you will find Lady Zee dressed for work—cleaning, organizing, and beautifully decorating the household of faith. She has a keen eye for detail and a gift for creating spaces that reflect warmth, order, and care.
She is a holy disrupter in the best sense of the word. In Sunday School or quiet moments of teaching, one insightful word from Lady Zee can shift the entire atmosphere into high praise. One of her most recent quotes, “I’m not playing, I mean heaven all the way”---[heaven In View y’all]. She speaks when it matters—and when she does, heaven responds.
Perhaps most telling of all is this: Lady Zephra Coles does not do a lot of talking about the work—she simply does the work. Her leadership is steady, her service is sincere, and her faith is evident in action.
A devoted wife of 45 years to Bishop Edward A. Coles; mother to two loving sons—Brian and Christopher—and a loving mother‑in‑love to Claudia, she has built a family rooted in faith and unity. Her joy is multiplied through her two precious grandchildren, Mariah and Alexander, who light up her world and keep her heart young.
